Skunk ( Mephitidae ) a family from the class of mammals of the order of predators. Until recently skunks were referred to the family of cuni as a subfamily of Mephitinae but molecular studies gave grounds to separate them into a separate family possibly closer to pandas than to kunim and raccoon.
Skunks are easy to recognize by their characteristic color consisting of white stripes or spots on a black background. Thus striped skunks are characterized by wide white bands on the back extending from the head to the tip of the tail. Bright patterns serve as a warning to possible predators. A distinctive feature of skunk fragrant anal glands which emit a corrosive substance with a persistent unpleasant odor. Skunks are able to spray a jet of secret at a distance of 1-6 m. All animals have a strong physique a fluffy tail and short limbs with powerful claws adapted for digging. The smallest in the family are spotted Spilogale their weight is from 200 g to 1 kg. Pork Conepatus the largest their mass reaches 4.5 kg.
They live almost exclusively in the New World. Striped skunks are common from southern Canada to Costa Rica pork skunks from the southern regions of the USA to Argentina spotty skunks from the south of British Columbia and Pennsylvania to Costa Rica. Attributed to the skunk in 1997 the smelly badgers are the only two species of this family that live outside the Americas. They are found on the islands of Indonesia.
